Last Friday, the California City Management Foundation (CCMF) sponsored the session “Crucible Experiences and Resilient Leadership” at the Municipal Management Association of Northern California (MMANC) Annual Conference in Sacramento, California.

The session brought together emerging leaders in the profession to speak candidly with seasoned professionals about how they overcame “crucible experiences” — extreme challenges in their careers. CCMF Board of Trustees member, Daly City City Manager and ICMA President Pat Martel began the session by discussing how to survive difficult situations and career setbacks with integrity and resiliency. After the presentation, a number of executives shared their own crucible experiences and how they survived. Session participants were then able to ask questions about navigating career changing events, and receive direct coaching from the participating executives, including CCMF Board of Trustee members Pat Martel, Marcia Raines, and Mike Parness.

“MMANC greatly appreciates CCMF’s sponsorship of this important session. It is critical that the next generation of municipal managers have direct access to veterans in the field, and CCMF is a great partner to work with,” said MMANC President Ryan DeVore. “Local government is a unique field with complex challenges. Whether it’s financial or logistical challenges, political pressure from the public or elected officials, or internal organizational chaos, we all face a crucible experience at some time. CCMF’s support helps make sessions like these possible.”

MMANC is a membership organization of local government professionals located throughout the 49 counties of Northern California. MMANC addresses the professional needs of public management staff through networking, education, and professional development.

CCMF sponsored and helped lead a very valuable session at the 2015 MMANC Annual Conference, titled "Crucible Experiences…
