Filing Deadline: July 19

About the City

Butte County is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and people-centered executive to serve as its next Assistant Chief Administrative Officer (ACAO). This at-will position offers an exceptional opportunity to join a collaborative organization committed to quality service and effective government while enjoying the natural beauty and quality of life that define Northern California.

Home to California State University, Chico, Bidwell Park, Lake Oroville, and the Sierra Nevada foothills, Butte County offers an appealing blend of rural character and urban amenities, a lower cost of living, and convenient access to Sacramento and the Bay Area.

The Position

In anticipation of the planned appointment of the current ACAO to the Chief Administrative Officer role, the County is seeking a trusted partner to help lead the organization into its next chapter. Reporting directly to the CAO, the ACAO serves as a key member of the executive leadership team and provides strategic leadership across County operations while ensuring Board priorities are effectively implemented.

The ACAO oversees the County Administration Department, including budget and policy analysis, emergency management, economic development, and Clerk of the Board functions. The position plays a critical role in organizational performance, strategic planning, policy development, and complex Countywide initiatives and serves as Emergency Operations Center Director during activations.

Following years dominated by disaster response and recovery, Butte County is increasingly focused on strengthening core operations and enhancing service delivery. Passage of Measure H has significantly improved the County’s financial outlook and created new opportunities to invest in the community and organization.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate brings executive-level experience, strong fiscal and operational expertise, political acumen, and a leadership style characterized by integrity, accountability, and genuine care for people.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range is $182,332.80 to $244,337.60, with approved 5% salary increases through 2028, plus an excellent executive benefits package.
