About the City 

Located 40 miles southeast of San Francisco in Northern California’s East Bay region, the city of Pleasanton has a population of 80,000 and was incorporated in 1894. In community surveys periodically commissioned by the city, Pleasanton residents have expressed exceptionally high levels of satisfaction with the quality of life and city services. Ninety-seven percent of respondents consider the city to be an excellent or good place to raise children. The city’s strong heritage is embodied in the historic downtown, where the quaint shops and fine dining along Main Street welcome residents and visitors alike. It is also the gathering place for the community, with the popular Concerts in the Park series, the weekly Farmers’ Market and summer street parties. Under the iconic Pleasanton arch, many parades and other special events are hosted, bringing neighbors and friends together to relax and celebrate.

The Position 

Appointed by and reporting directly to the city council, the city manager serves as the city’s chief executive officer, providing strategic leadership and overseeing the effective administration of all municipal operations. The Ideal Candidate 

The successful candidate will be a strategic, forward-thinking executive with exceptional political acumen, financial expertise and a proven ability to lead organizations through change while preserving the unique character and values that make Pleasanton an exceptional community. Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor`s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration or a closely related field and have significant executive-level municipal management experience, preferably as a city manager or assistant city manager, or in a comparable senior leadership position. The city manager must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of municipal government operations, public administration principles, organizational leadership, budgeting, personnel administration and the contemporary issues facing local government. A valid California Class C driver`s license, or the ability to obtain one upon appointment, is required.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual salary for the outgoing city manager was $343,512, with flexibility to enter the $400,000 range depending on the selected candidate’s exceptional qualifications and experience.
