The California City Management Foundation (CCMF) hosted two panel discussions this September at the League of California Cities Annual Conference in Anaheim and the MMANC Annual Conference near Yosemite National Park. The sessions brought together experienced leaders to discuss navigating public scrutiny and the day-to-day realities of city management.

At the League of California Cities Annual Conference, the panel Governing in the Fishbowl: Leadership Under Social Media, Public Records and 24/7 Scrutiny, explored the challenges of leading under constant public scrutiny. With social media, public records requests and community reactions unfolding in real time, city managers and councils must balance timely communication with thoughtful decision-making.

Panelists discussed practical strategies for responding to online narratives, managing high-pressure communications and maintaining transparency and public trust. The discussion featured:

At the MMANC Annual Conference, the panel Behind the Desk: The Real Life of a City Manager, CCMF offered a candid look at the city manager’s role. From early morning briefings to late-night council meetings, the session explored the competing demands, unexpected challenges and sense of purpose that shape local government leadership.

Panelists shared perspectives on managing daily responsibilities, adapting to changing priorities and serving their communities. The discussion gave attendees a closer look at the executive role and the experiences that help prepare leaders for its demands. The panel featured:
