About the City 

The city of Lompoc (pronounced as “Lom-poke”) is a welcoming community located along California’s central coast, known for its scenic landscapes, historic character, vibrant mural program and exceptional wines. Situated along Highway 1 approximately 55 miles northwest of Santa Barbara, 155 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 270 miles south of San Francisco, Lompoc encompasses approximately 11.7 square miles and serves a population of about 43,000 residents. Lompoc’s rich history reflects the early beginnings of California. The city’s renowned mural program transforms Old Town Lompoc into an outdoor art gallery, attracting visitors from throughout the region.

The Position 

Under the administrative direction of the city manager, the assistant city manager serves as a key member of the city’s executive leadership
team and provides strategic, operational, and organizational leadership across the organization. This position assists in implementing city council policies and priorities, oversees assigned departments and special projects, provides professional guidance to city departments, ensures regulatory compliance and serves as acting city manager in the city manager’s absence.

The asistant city manager also represents the city manager before the city council, community groups and regional partners, while fostering collaboration and organizational excellence throughout the city.

The Ideal Candidate 

The city of Lompoc seeks a collaborative, approachable and community-focused leader with a strong understanding of public policy, municipal operations and the opportunities and challenges of a growing community. The ideal candidate will recognize the tremendous potential of the city’s hundreds of acres of vacant, city-owned land and bring the vision, strategic leadership and collaborative approach needed to guide thoughtful development and foster long-term economic growth. Qualified candidates will possess a combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position. The typical background includes a bachelor`s degree in public administration, political science or a related field, along with five years of progressively responsible management and project management experience. A master`s degree is highly desirable. Experience serving in a management role within a California full-service municipality is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual salary range for the assistant city manager is $156,477.98 – $212,894.86; placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience.
