The program is part of ICMA’s ongoing efforts to prepare the next generation of local government managers. Every year, over 4,000 individuals participate in webinars, one-on-one coaching, networking events, seminars, job shadowing programs, and a Woman’s Summit (specifically encouraging women in local government). In addition, the Cal-ICMA Coaching Program offers a City/County Manager in Residence Program wherein sixteen California universities provide a one-week residency bringing chief executives into their classrooms to share their stories and encourage students to pursue careers in local government.

CCMF is proud to support the ICMA coaching program. Nurturing the next generation of local government leaders is essential to the future health of California’s cities. As baby-boomers retire, California is finding fewer young professionals positioned to take their place. This is due in part to a bias against careers in government. Potential recruits fear red tape and bureaucratic work places, but the older generation knows the deep satisfaction that comes from civil service.

If our profession is to attract top managers in the coming years, we need to embrace  up-and-coming talent, create opportunities for them to develop their talents, and engage with them to share what we’ve learned. In short, we must support programs like the one offered by Cal-ICMA.
